Terrazzo is one of the oldest and most enduring forms of decorative flooring and surface design, and it's currently experiencing a huge resurgence in home décor. Its unique speckled, aggregated look adds texture and sophistication to any piece.
Creating your own terrazzo pieces with Artriso Marbo One eco resin is surprisingly straightforward. This guide will walk you through the entire DIY terrazzo casting tutorial, from making your chips to the final, satisfying sanding process that reveals the magic.

Phase 1: How to Make Terrazzo Chips
The key to great terrazzo with eco resin is the quality and variety of your chips. Artriso Marbo One makes this process easy!
What You’ll Need:
Artriso Marbo One (Small amount for chips)
Water
Vibrant Artriso Pigments
A flat, smooth surface (like a silicone mat or plastic sheet)
The Process:
Mix Small Batches: Prepare small batches of Marbo One powder and water (using the standard ratio).
Pigment Heavily: Add a high concentration of different pigments to each batch (e.g., deep blue, bright yellow, terracotta). You want these colours to be bold and solid.
Pour Thin Slabs: Pour each pigmented batch into thin, flat slabs (about 5-10mm thick) on your smooth surface.
Cure & Crush: Allow the slabs to set fully (at least 20 minutes). Once hard, place them in a bag or towel and use a hammer to break them into various sizes or you can use your hand to crush. Aim for a mix of small pieces (rice grain size) and medium pieces (lentil or pebble size).
Store: Your chips are ready to be used!
Phase 2: Casting with the Terrazzo Eco Resin Technique
Now, we combine your handmade chips with a contrasting base colour to create the final piece.
What You’ll Need:
Artriso Marbo One Base Mix (The main colour, usually white or light grey, or even black)
Your prepared Terrazzo Chips (from Phase 1)
Silicone Moulds
Digital Scale & Mixing Tools
The Process:
Prepare the Base: Mix your main batch of Marbo One (your background colour) according to the standard water ratio of 3:1.
Add the Chips: Once the base mix is smooth, fold in your terrazzo chips. A good starting ratio is roughly 15-20% chips by weight of the total mix.
Mix Gently: Mix slowly and briefly to distribute the chips evenly throughout the resin. Do not mix for too long, or the chips may settle at the bottom.
Pour & Tap: Pour the mixture into your silicone mould. Immediately after pouring, lift the mould a few inches and tap it repeatedly on your work surface. This helps release air bubbles and settles the chips near the surface.
Cure: Allow the piece to cure fully before demoulding (Artriso Marbo One allows demoulding quickly in 40 minutes, but let it sit for a few hours before sanding).
Phase 3: The Crucial Sanding Terrazzo Guide
This is the most critical step—the sanding process exposes the hidden chips and reveals the classic speckled finish.
What You’ll Need:
Orbital Sander or Sanding Block
Water (or a spray bottle)
Wet/Dry Sandpaper (Start with 120-180 grit, move to 320-400 grit)
Your preferred Artriso Sealer
The Process:
Initial Sanding (The Reveal): Using your 120 or 180 grit paper, sand the top surface of your demoulded piece, using a wet sanding method (mist the surface with water as you sand). Caution: Sanding will be dusty; wear a mask! Sanding removes the top layer of the base colour and reveals the embedded chips. Continue until the chips are clearly visible and the surface is mostly flat.
Fine Sanding (The Smooth): Switch to 320 or 400 grit paper (wet sanding) and smooth out all scratch marks from the initial sanding. The surface should feel silky smooth to the touch.
Clean & Dry: Rinse the piece thoroughly to remove all slurry and dust. Let it dry completely.
Seal and Finish: Apply your Artriso Sealer. Applying the sealer (especially Stone Wax or GlazeSeal) dramatically deepens the colour and makes the terrazzo chips pop with clarity.
Why Artriso Marbo One is Perfect for the Terrazzo Technique
Chip Durability: Our high-strength formula means your chips won't crumble during the sanding process.
Rapid Repeatability: Since it's just-add-water, you can quickly mix and pour multiple batches of chips in one session.
Smooth Sanding: Marbo One sands beautifully, resulting in a buttery smooth final product.
